This article pays attention to the first-person narratives in the postmodern retellings. It looks into the retellings told in the first-person narrator including Garrison Keillor’s “My Stepmother, Myself” and Priscilla Galloway’s “A Taste for Beauty,” and considers the implication of the changes from the omniscient narrator in the traditional fairytale to the first-person narrator in the postmodern fairytale retellings. This article argues that the first-person retellings of the Grimms’ “Snow White” illustrate the multiplicity of views that continue to challenge the seeming wholeness and authority associated with the traditional tales. As illustrated in “My Stepmother, Myself” and “A Taste for Beauty,” providing multiple, even opposing, perspectives via first-person narrators undermines the authority endowed on the old tale and further the authenticity associated with omniscience. Ultimately, the postmodern first-person retellings break the centrality and the homogeneous voice of omniscience, the combination of which produce plurality, eventually creating plethora of tales, which is the very trait of fairytales.
