John Marston’s often neglected play The Insatiate Countess (1613) shows its audiences how female sexuality is unsuccessfully repressed despite being denigrated by misogyny, which was an important part of the social and cultural fabric of early modern English society. This paper highlights a thus-far underrated and highly unconventional heroine, Isabella, in Marston’s play by focusing primarily on her on-stage monologues and direct addresses through which she not only critiques such misogynist slander but also fights back against the tradition of male satirical attacks on women. Isabella might be a fictional character played by a boy actor, but she also had contemporary real-life models, female pamphleteers who fought back, and whose language often echoed that of Isabella’s. Examining the historical context of such pamphlet gender war along with Marston’s promiscuous heroine could help us to reevaluate Marston’s play as an early modern text representing how women fought back against the misogyny in various ways.
