The American ecological poet, Robinson Jeffers is well-known for his unique idea of inhumanism, which goes beyond irrationalism by suggesting that humans should throw away all their properties to assimilate into Mother Nature. Meanwhile, the American novelist John Steinbeck wrote “The Snake,” which depicts a mythic or psychic world existing within the unconsciousness. This paper aims to illuminate human narcissism as indicative of Jeffers’s inhumanism; and the sexual repression as the effect of reason in the name of civilization. I try to investigate the texts of “Tamar” and “The Snake” in the light of some relevant psychological theories. Through this analysis, I argue that the lewd acts and disastrous ending of the long poem are due to the dishonest self-attachment; and that sometimes sexuality can be extruded through the scientific and rational veil, asking a fundamental question about human mentality.
