This thesis aimed to track the ‘moving’ paths of an independence activist Lee, Hwa-Rim, and also to read Lee, Hwa-Rim’s Memoir again in the perspective of ‘study’. Lee, Hwa-Rim’s lifetime was composed of ‘study’. Lee, Hwa-Rim who was born in Pyeongyang of January 1905, worked as a kindergarten teacher in Gunsan and Cheongjin. From the moment when leaving for Shanghai in 1930 to the year when she became 95 years old in 1999, she had to endlessly ‘move’ to different places like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing, Guilin, Changsha, Luoyang, Taihang Mountains, Yanan, Beijing, Shenyang, Jilin, Darren, and Changchun. Instead of finding the reason why she had to move so many times from independence movement and revolution, this study aimed to analyze the reason based on ‘study.’ Actually, such numerous spaces where Lee, Hwa-Rim moved were the crucial places for social interactions that enabled her to ‘study’ in various methods because those cities of East Asia in the 20th century were continuously changing their own unique characteristics through interactions with outside. When Lee, Hwa-Rim was over 90 years old, she stopped moving any more, and then concentrated her last energy on her memoir. Even when she was “older than 90 years old, she organized her life by paying attention to big events at home and abroad”. The “narrative identity’ shown in Lee, Hwa-Rim’s Memoir reveals who she is. Lee, Hwa-Rim consistently said she was a woman who ‘moved’ to find a place for ‘studying’ in her entire life. The ideologies like national liberation and revolution were also the values that Lee, Hwa-Rim acquired from concrete actions of study. Lee, Hwa-Rim’s Memoir shows who she is and what kind of person she is. Lee, Hwa-Rim was a female revolutionist who struggled hard to match study and labor, and movement and reformation with her own life.
