This study was conducted to examine the pattern of transmission of Kim Byeong‐hwa narrative, a story transmitted in Uzbekistan of Central Asia about Kim Byeong‐hwa, an ethnic Korean and twice hero of labor, and to explore the narrative structure of contemporary heroic narratives. Kim Byeong‐hwa was born at Daepyeongjae in Gyeongheung, but as he reported chapigou(차삐고우) as his birthplace, he could live as a Soviet citizen. Since he became the leader of the North Star in the 1940s, he had left many achievements while working there for 34 years. Kim Byeong‐hwa narrative has the limitation of transmission confined within the village where the character had worked, and the informants were also related to the village. The pattern and meaning of transmission observed in Kim Byeong‐hwa narrative are as follows: first, a clean and upright leader without greed; second, a leader respecting everybody; third, a leader expanding the collective farm; and fourth, a leader good at integrating and managing the family and building a community. Different from the structure of a hero’s life, the narrative structure of contemporary heroic narratives observed in Kim Byeong‐hwa narrative ran around the character’s activities, and episodes in the other periods did not play any notable role for the narrative structure. The findings of this study are expected to be useful in inferring characteristics in comparison with heroic narratives of the socialist group such as Hong Beom‐do.
