This study will be the precedent research for Park Kyung-Ri's many romantic novels in earnest. It investigates how the writer considers the woman's image and reflects her thoughts through the method to realize the woman in her description of love. Park Kyung-Ri's romantic novel seems to follow a melodramatic formula, but those are beside points of the romantic novel's characteristics. First of all, there is no happy ending, such as love in family or love for a wedding. Her female characters, whom Park Kyung-Ri creates, do not seek forgiveness or regret after a love failure. Of course, it does not mean the possibility of new values about love immediately. However, this point is the reason why a reader interprets the meanings of her romantic novels carefully. 'Saintess and Witch' and 'Love Song' emphasize the innocence of love, such as existing romantic novels, and ask to connect between the innocence of love and personal physical innocence. Existing romantic novels assume that the effort of love is a happy marriage, but Park Kyung-Ri's romantic novels show that real love does not belong to the marriage system. Moreover, she stresses the love is not limited by the marriage system. The problem she says in her novels is the double standards of the woman in society. A woman's sexuality is divided as a procreation function and a pleasure function, and those two functions stand against each other. 'Saintess' and 'prostitute' are two types of female repression, and both are nothing but an otherizing. Since Park Kyung-Ri shows how to consume and exploit the woman's image through two conflicted female characters in her novels, it has a role to criticize the double standards about the woman in society. Two female characters in 'Saintess and Witch' and 'Love Song' are embodied as conflicted images through a tri-angle relationship by male characters, but both novels are beside a formula of saintess' successful love and punishment witch. They deny the existing formula by showing how witch characters keep their innocence of love and how saintess characters fail to save their family and love. Park Kyung-Ri's romantic novels mainly ask the following questions; what the meaning of the union of love between man and woman is, what the real love is, and what innocence is. Those questions can introspect the double standards and marriage system critically, disclose how women were suppressed at that time, and offer a motive to consider what the moral and free union of love is.

이 연구는 박경리가 1960년대까지 쓴 엄청난 양의 연애소설을 본격적인 연구의 대상으로 삼기 위한 선행연구가 될 것이다. 초기 연애소설이라 할 수 있는 『애가』, 『성녀와 마녀』를 중심으로 연애서사에서 여성의 모습이 구현되는 방식이 50년대 단편소설과 어떻게 달라졌고, 일반 멜로드라마 공식과 어떻게 다른지 분석함으로써 박경리의 여성 인물의 변화 양상을 연구하고자 한다. 이는 박경리가 쓴 신문/잡지 연재소설, 특히 연애소설이 갖는 특징과 여성을 향한 이중잣대에 관한 문제의식, 그리고 개성 있는 여성 인물을 통한 서사적 모색의 과정을 살펴보는 연구라 할 수 있다. 박경리의 연애소설은 멜로드라마적인 공식을 따르는 듯 보이지만 연애소설의 특징으로부터 벗어난 지점들이 있다. 우선, 결혼을 전제한 사랑, 가정 내의 사랑이라는 행복한 결말이 없다. 그리고 박경리가 창조한 여성 인물들은 사랑의 실패 이후에도 후회하거나 용서를 구하지 않는다. 박경리는 오히려 사랑이 결혼이란 제도 내에 국한될 수 없음을 역설한다. 그 중 특히, 박경리 소설에서 문제 삼고 있는 것은 여성에 대한 사회의 이중잣대의 문제다. 50년대 단편소설에 주로 등장하던 결벽증적 성격의 여성 인물 대신 ‘성녀’와 ‘창녀’로 유형화할 수 있는 여성 인물들을 전략적으로 제시하면서 작가는 이 여성에 대한 관념적 사고가 얼마나 여성 억압적이며 모순적인지 비판한다. 『애가』, 『성녀와 마녀』, 두 작품 모두 일방적인 마녀에 대한 징벌, 성녀의 사랑성취라는 공식에서 벗어난다. 두 작품 모두 ‘마녀’의 이미지인 여성들이 어떻게 자신의 사랑에 대한 순결을 지켰고, ‘성녀’의 이미지인 여성들이 어떻게 가정을 지키지 못하며 사랑에 실패하는지 보여주면서 연애소설의 기존 공식을 흔든다. 더불어 여성에 대한 사회적 관념에서 벗어나지 못해 과장된 비극적 정서 속에 가학적인 방황을 일삼는 남성 인물들과 여성을 향한 이중잣대라는 억압적 상황에서 그 고통을 감당하는 여성 인물은 대조를 이룬다. 결국, 박경리는 사랑의 고통에 따른 존재론적 고독을 감당해야 한다는 낭만성을 통해 진정한 정조와 순결에 대해 반문하며 진정한 사랑의 결합을 방해하는 사회적 관념, 가부장적 이데올로기를 비판한다. 박경리의 초기 연애소설의 여성 인물이 이전 시기와 어떻게 달라졌는지 살펴봄으로써 이후, 박경리가 사회적 억압에 타협하지 않으며 자신의 존재론적 고독을 감당하는 강한 여인상을 다양한 방법으로 발전시켜나갈 것임을 알 수 있었다. 여성을 향한 이중잣대에 대한 문제의식과 여성 인물의 변화는 이후 60년대 수많은 장편소설에서 다양한 변주와 실험을 통해 발전적으로 이어지는데 이는 이후의 과제로 남겨 놓겠다.
