This article explored the socio-cultural meaning of new love that the novel The Winter Woman appealed to the public based on the specific illumination of the public"s love consciousness at the time. In the period of the 1970s, the idea of romantic love still maintained a dominant ideology in the love discourse. However, at the level of real life of the public, the movement against romantic love was remarkable. The public of the period actually pursued a practical marriage although they did not deny the ideal of romantic love and the notion of a ideal family composed of the true love, which was enforced by the dominant discourse of the authoritarian regime. Young people preferred the word ‘date’, which felt lighter and less burdensome, than ‘yônae(love)’, which was linked to marriage traditionally and emphasized a spiritual relationship. The ideal marriage method that the public chose was ‘arranged love’, which was called “jungmae-yônae”. Based on such a cultural climate of contradiction between knowledge and practice, the unconventional story of “The Winter Woman” drew great attention of the public. In the story, a female protagonist, who experienced the death of a young man obsessed with romantic ideology, became a heroin who practiced sexual freedom without love while maintaining purity of heart and was called even a holy virgin.
The young guys" resistant beliefs, which tried to pursue true human values against the corrupt society, was constantly adjusted downwards in front of the heroin Ewha"s sexual tolerance in the story. This ethical hierarchy, aiming for a principled and macroscopic universality, made the political nature of the work be condensed into Ewha"s philanthropic morals, regardless the author"s intention to pursue a political allegory novel, However, the practice of breaking the customary ethics of love lacked the concreteness of life in which heterogeneous and multilayered details were complexly intertwined. Ewha and young people"s practice of resisting the hypocritical ethics established another fantasy of new Autre with the will to overthrow the corrupt Autre.
