In the Works of Zhu Xi, self-cultivation at the Not-Yet Aroused State of mind-and-heart needs or not. Because of this, the scholars in the Ho and Rak group had a debate. Han Wonjin in Ho group was criticizing the argument of Yi Hyeonik in Rak group, not to be needed self-cultivation at the Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind, with Kim Changheup supporting. The argument of Yi based on Zhu Xi’s not being in need of self-cultivation. In Rak group, Kim was criticizing Yi, with Park Pilju supporting a debate between Yi and Park at the time. Kim argued to be needed preserving the mind and nurturing nature, caution and apprehension, at the Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind, while Yi argued not to be needed the cultivation because the Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind is not aroused emotions as well as bad thinkings. The arguments of Kim and Park was based on Zhu Xi’s being in need of self-culitivation. Although is the state, man should have self-cultivation because can arise bad thinkings according to Kim’s argument. Han was crticizing Yi, with Kim supporting. Therefore, Han’s, Ho group’s representative, supporting Kim, Rak group’s representative, was not to keep their own claims. Kim and Han is not the same the definition of the Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind. That of Kim means it having original nature, while that of Han means it having original as well as physical nature. Kim and Yi Gan have a common point. Therefore, the Veritable Records during King Jeongjo’s Regime recorded both Kim and Yi Gan to belong to Rak group. However, their self-cultivation at Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind is not the same. That of Yi Gan means a perfect Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind not to be needed self-cultivation, while that of Kim means it to be need. According to that, The Veritable Records of King Jeongjo was suitable for their concept, the Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind, but not suitable for their self-cultivation. Their debate has necessity because the goal of neo-Confucianism aims self-cultivation. Therefore, Han’s comment on their debate has necessity. According to that, this is the conclusion of Horak debate. Their debate was developed due to Zhu Xi’s duality of a theory of self-cultivation in the Not-Yet Aroused State of the mind, but they had precisely established their own theories based on those of Zhu Xi.

주희는 미발시 공부로서 계구가 필요하다고 말하면서도 필요하지 않다고 말하고 있기 때문에 그것이 문제이다. 이것은 훗날 조선후기 호락논쟁의 쟁점이 되었다. 호학의 한원진은 낙학인 이현익의 미발시 공부가 필요하지 않다는 주장을 비판하면서 김창흡을 지지하였다. 당시 김창흡은 낙학에서 이현익과 박필주가 논쟁을 벌인 것에 대하여 이현익을 비판하면서 박필주를 지지하였다. 그는 미발시에도 함양공부가 필요하다고 주장하였다. 이현익은 미발이란 희노애락의 감정이 일어나지 않은 상태일 뿐만 아니라 허황된 생각도 생기지 않은 상태이기 때문에 그러한 공부가 필요하지 않다고 주장하였고, 주희의 미발무공부에 근거하였다. 반면에 김창흡은 그러한 상태일지라도 그것을 보존해야 하기 때문에 함양으로서 계신공구 공부가 필요하다고 주장하였고, 주희의 미발공부에 근거하였다. 김창흡은 미발이란 본연지성만 있으므로 순선하다고 여긴 반면에 한원진은 기질지성도 있기 때문에 선악이 함께 있다고 여긴 것이 다른 점이다. 이간은 미발을 본연지성만 있으므로 순선하다고 주장하였는데 그것이 김창흡과 공통점이다. 이 때문에 ??정조실록』에서 이간을 김창흡과 같은 낙학으로 분류하였으나 미발시 공부설도 같은 것은 아니었다. 이간은 미발을 중과 부중으로 구분하여 부중의 미발은 공부가 필요하지만 중의 미발은 공부가 필요하지 않다고 말하였는데 그것은 주희의 미발공부의 유무에 근거하였다. 이간의 미발시 무공부는 이현익과 공통점을 갖는 반면에 김창흡과 다르다. 그러므로 ??정조실록』에서 이간과 김창흡을 낙학으로 분류한 것은 미발시 본연지성만 있다는 주장이 같았기 때문일 뿐 공부설이 같아서 분류한 것은 아니었다. 또한 그들의 미발시 공부에 관한 논쟁은 성리학의 목적에 해당되기 때문에 필연적으로 나타날 수밖에 없었다. 따라서 그것은 호락논쟁의 결론에 해당된다고 할 수 있다.
