The aim of this study is to examine how motivations underpinning the act of watching cooking videos (vicarious gratification, enjoyment or thrill, and information-seeking) affect gratification of watching cooking video and assesses how this form of media watching influences purchasing decisions for the food items featured in the cooking videos. This study made use of an online survey administered to cooking video viewers who are experienced in User Generated Content (UGC) platforms. The analysis showed that vicarious gratification, enjoyment, and information-seeking had positive impacts on the gratification obtained. Moreover, the analysis indicated that the gratification obtained was a predictor of the purchase intention for the food items featured in the cooking videos. Notably, self-efficacy for cooking played a moderating role in the relationship between the gratification obtained and the purchase intention for the food items in the cooking videos. The vital contribution of this study is that this research clarifies of the relationship between motivations of watching cooking videos, media gratification, and purchase intention of the food item. Furthermore, this study is meaningful as it provided insight into watching cooking video on UGC and purchase intention of the tangible food item in the cooking video.
