Gap Junctional Intercellular Communication (GJIC) plays an important role in maintaining tissue homeostasis. Furthermore, Wnt/β-catenin signaling triggers cellular responses related to cell proliferation and differentiation to injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction between GJIC and Wnt/β-catenin signaling by treatment with the toxic agent benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). In WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells, BaP treatment resulted in GJIC inhibition and decreased connexin 43 (Cx43), a major GJIC protein. Moreover, we found BaP-mediated downregulation of Wnt/β -catenin signaling associated with the PI3K-Akt pathway.
