Patients that manifest severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) typically develop T cell lymphopenia, increased antibody titers and an exacerbated inflammatory response or cytokine storm. Many individuals manifesting severe COVID-19 are typically older (>60 years) or have comorbidities with associated immunologic dysfunction (i.e. obesity, cardiovascular disease). Biologic aging due to calendric age or to underlying immunopathology leads to a progressive decline in immune competence resulting in increased susceptibility to infections. This ill-understood immune dysfunction termed "immunosenescence" likely reflects a multifaceted process.
