This study is based on the reading of Psalm 109 together with Genesis 16 with the methodology of intertextuality to find biblical alternatives to group bullying and conflict resolution. In Genesis 16, Sarah and Abraham form a group and abuse Hagar. Hagar runs away to protect herself from the danger of ‘group bullying.’ In the face of mass curses, the poet of Psalm 109 files a complaint, exposes and pleads against God for the verbal abuse of a group. Hagar’s escape is compared to the poet’s supplication. Here, through intertextuality, the form of group bullying of Sarah and Abraham can be embodied by verbal abuse. The theological work of reading Hagar’s story with a personal petition is very important in that it can shed light on the trauma of the “group bullying” victim while also inferring active resistance from an individual who is not silent on “group bullying.”
Meeting Hagar in the wilderness, the messenger of Yahweh commands Hagar to “go back to your mistress and submit to her.” Hagar’s ‘flee’ is modified to ‘go back.’ This case summons an important theological motif in Psalm 109 through intertextuality. Psalm 109 summons the poet’s desire for social acceptance that “enemies recognize and know” that Yahweh stands on the right side of the poet and works for him. This highlights the importance of third-party intervention and interference between perpetrators and victims of “group bullying.” As such, God’s demand for Hagar’s “go back” means that God directly intervenes in Hagar’s social re-acceptance in connection with the “group bullying” incident.
