This article attempted not only to reveal the subject of Psalm 37 by analyzing this psalm literarily in detail, but also to find out the functions of this psalm in its literary context by studying its literary and thematic connections with neighboring psalms. This paper first examined what subordinate wisdom genres are used by the verses in Psalm 37, how the vocabularies of “the righteous,” “the wicked,” and “Yahweh” are distributed in the verses, and how the verses describe the features and the destinies of the righteous and the wicked. Then, it summarized the repeated expressions in the entire psalm and analyzed how these expressions emphasize the subject of Psalm 37. According to this analysis, we divided this psalm into several stanzas and derived on how each stanza emphasizes the theme of Psalm 37. The theme can be summarized as follows: “the righteous who are afflicted eventually will inherit the land and will enjoy peace there, but the wicked who seem to flourish will soon be cut off, because Yahweh rules over the world justly.” Through the study of the common themes and vocabularies that the Psalm 37 have with its neighboring psalms, we can acknowledge that the subject of Psalm 37 appears first in Psalm 25, then is expressed in a form of desire for protection in the temple in Psalms 26-33, but is much more intensively articulated and emphasized in Psalms 34-37. The lesson of Psalm 37 is to encourage the righteous who are suffering from the wicked to escape to Yahweh in the temple and not to give up doing good. In this respect, this psalm is located as a theological conclusion of Psalms 25-37, especially Psalms 34-37.
