This study is to investigate the social conflict between the Johannine community and the jewish synagogue reflected in the farewell discourse of the Fourth Gospel(Jn.13:31-16:33) in the light of the sociological perspective. Up to now, great attention has been shown to the question of the redactional history of the farewell discourse. My concern is, however, not to trace the redactional history but to explore the conflict between them by focusing on the final literary form of the farewell discourse.
Jn.13:31-14:31 shows the departure of Jesus from his disciples. It implies that the threat of separation from the synagogue had brought about worry and fear to the Johannine community members. They had tried to relieve the agitation raised by the excommunication from the jewish synagogue. The paragraph, John’s 15:1-17, shows us the situation right after the expulsion of the Johannine community from the synagogue. In this passage, Jesus refers to the branch of grapevine. It is deeply connected with establishing the social identity of the Johannine community. In Jn. 15:18-16:33, the statements of hate and persecution of the world and the judgment of the Paraclete reflected the hostile relationship with the synagogue after the banishment.
In short, the farewell discourse can be well understood in terms of the social deprivation of the Johannine community caused by the excommunication from the synagogue. In this sense, Jesus’ farewell saying is deeply related to establish the identity of the Johannine community, reacting the crisis of their community.
