This paper, as a review article on James S. Coleman"s sociology of education, seeks an integrated understanding on the two dimensions of education policy and social theory. Chapter I introduces the whole plan of the paper, and Chapter II outlines the major literature of Coleman"s sociology of education. Chapter III discusses the educational-policy-related implications of Coleman"s sociology of education. It explains the socio-institutional backgrounds behind the approach of school effects research (SER), policy orientations toward the goal of upward equalization of academic achievement, and analytic interests in school climate factors like curriculum, discipline, and community. It also sheds light on the critical nature of school effects research as a systematic counter-argument against the paradigm of American education. Chapter IV discusses the social-theory-related elements of Coleman"s sociology of education. After finding the interface of Coleman’s rational choice theory (RCT) with school effects research from the practical interest in reforming schooling, the incentive problem is modeled by applying the basic model of rational choice theory. It then looks at issues such as ‘busing’ and community (‘social capital’) on the basis of the incentive-problem framework. Chapter V proposes several research tasks while confirming the present significance of the ‘Colemanesque’ approach in sociology of education.
