This study explored potential cross-cultural differences between English newspaper editorials written by Korean writers and those by native writers of English in the distribution of interactional metadiscourse. Two elite newspapers, The Korea Herald (n=60) and The New York Times (n=70), were adopted as corpora, using Hyland’s interpersonal model of metadiscourse to compare them in the writers" use of interactional metadiscourse to construct a public opinion in interaction with readers. Findings showed that native English writers used more diverse types of interactional metadiscourse than Korean writers. In regard to cultural differences, Korean editors’ extensive use of Korean(s) and inclusive-we displayed their collective social identity, whereas native writers" showed their internal argumentation with rhetorical questions and you. Some pedagogical implications, such as a direct instruction of metadiscourse, intercultural writing instruction, and genre-based instruction, are suggested.
