This study aims to investigate the relationship between translation and untranslatability, and its potential for the communication between different languages where different cultures are represented at the level of world literature. For this purpose, I look into the meanings and layers of cultural translation through the perspectives of many critics including Spivak, and the potentials of untranslatability. Not only emphasizing its functional aspect of translation but also magnifying hermeneutical, philosophical stances of untranslatability, I examined the inevitable encounter on untranslatabiity during the process of translation. I will examine the possibility and positivity of untranslatability in relation to the act of translation, through the lens of critics including Gayatri Spivak. On the process, The Vegetarian, the English translation of Ch’aesikjuuija, can offer various layers to analyze this relationship.
