This essay claims that Thomas Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge takes the Luddite insistence on the miraculous as a narrative strategy to question the post-9/11 discourse on historical reality. The novel’s blatant violation of the laws of nature is a serious aesthetic and political decision Pynchon makes to ironize the technopolitical order that is bent on infantilizing people’s understanding of human reality by demystifying and reducing it to bare flows of data or blank facts that resist transcendental understanding or aesthetic representation. To unsettle the post-9/11 spatial logic of “Ground Zero” that promotes a literalist and exceptionalist perception of historical reality, Pynchon complicates the increasingly posthumanized condition of reality by plotting imagined routes of virtuality between real space and cyberspace, fact and fantasy.
