This paper aims to examine the way in which Thomas Pynchon’s 9/11 novel Bleeding Edge revisits The Great Gatsby and its legacy of the American Dream that was once interrogated in The Crying of Lot 49. Pynchon in Bleeding Edge continues to contemplate the possibility of the miracle of communication that Oedipa Maas has imagined in her quest for an alternative form of communitas wandering around the backstreets of San Narciso. In Bleeding Edge, Maxine Tarnow not only roams about New York City and its environs around the time of 9/11, but also dives into the cyber wilderness of the Deep Web to find a semblance of Utopian community. Whereas Oedipa fails to break out of the paranoid binary between the hieroglyphic streets of San Narciso and the disenchanted, mundane American continuity, Bleeding Edge proposes a geographic conception of virtuality that helps critically reflect upon the post-9/11 historical conditions of geographic imagination and maintain the persistent Luddite hope for miracle. Bleeding Edge is Pynchon’s Luddite answer to the perverse imperative to infantilize the country by banning irony and fiction.
