This study aims at investigating the description of the history of education in elementary, middle and high school history textbooks. The lecturers who cover history of education at universities need to check what kind of background knowledge the students have in their classes. It is necessary to investigate the way of description related to education in the history textbooks. For this study, we examined government-published elementary school level social studies textbooks, nine different kinds of government-authorized middle school level history textbooks and eight different kinds of government-authorized high school level Korean history textbooks. The findings are as follows: first, description of educational problems throughout history is lacking, and textbooks do not contain in-depth content about the systems of education and selection. Second, because education is not the center of narrative, there are many political interpretations about the systems of education and selection. Third, the proportions of dealing with educational content are not consistent by period, and the descriptions of education during late Joseon Dynasty and modern Korea are very inadequate. Fourth, there is incompatible content among textbooks to describe the same subject. In this circumstance, lecturers of history of education should keep in mind the following points for their lectures. Lecturers should explain the background and causality of educational institutions in detail to aid students’ comprehension. Lecturers should present educational systems from an educational perspective, rather than employing a political interpretation. Researchers of history of education should actively be conducting focused on various periods. The contents of history textbooks are based on the achievements of academia. Therefore, it will be possible to add to or revise the content related to education after researchers accumulate enough relevant research.
