In accordance with the revised 2015 social studies education curriculum, elementary school social studies textbooks for 5th and 6th graders will be soon written, and textbooks of the history category will be developed as well. Amidst of this situation, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics and changes, focused on the history category, of the revised social studies education curriculum and search for directions for developing history textbooks. It can be said that this is timely research. First of all, the education curriculum, focused on the history category, was analyzed. The results of this analysis showed that some contents of the history category are scattered while an integrative compilation considering other categories was intended. For example, the prehistoric age and the contemporary history are scatteringly placed while the synoptic flow is maintained.
Next, the results of investigating into the characteristics and problems of the history category are as follows. First, as thematic history centered on historical figures and cultural history is emphasized, an issue of the compatibility with the synoptic history arose. Second, the possibility of stressing political history and ethnic history became greater. Third, it was also found out that the study of regional history was emphasized.
Lastly, the results of searching for new directions for developing textbooks are as follows. First, integrative compilation is required instead of simple combinations in the history category. Second, studying activities related to students’ life are necessary. Third, diversity in analyzing history needs to be sought. Fourth, as the study about historical figures is emphasized, it is urgent to establish directions for this. Fifth, considering the fact that the study of regional history is emphasized, it is necessary to develop the contents of this study. It is hoped that the suggestions of this research would be usefully accepted in making high-quality textbooks in the future.
