There was a history of billow painting in the pre-modern China and Korea based on the aesthetic theory for living water. Water theme in the traditional images of China and Korea was understood in the three kinds of thought; symbolic image, metaphorical image and scenery image. Billow painting was developed as one of the scenery water image and by the viewer’s demand of touching sensory nerves. It was decorative for the interior of palaces and temples during the Tang and Song China, and loved by literati. Shu Shi’s essay about water painting focuses on living water and feeling chills, which became the most important theory for billow painting. In doing so, the representative water painting by Ma Yuan was produced and it was influential on the paintings of Ming China including literati of Wu School. In Korea the living water theory was accepted by scholars. Billow painting was loved especially in the nineteenth century.
