The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the similarities and differences between ‘들’ and ‘-lar’ which are the primary expressions of plurality in Korean and Turkish languages. It is possible to point out that the Korean and Turkish languages are quite similar because they both use an affix to express plurality in their sentence structure. This means they do not use lexical plurals (man»men, child»children) such as the English language does. The affixes in both languages not only can express the plurality of nouns but can also express the meaning of distributive collectivity, and associative plurality. Some of the differences between ‘들’ and ‘-lar’ are explained in the examples stated below:
First, in Turkish, ‘-lar’ only be attached to a noun. But in Korean, ‘들’ can be attached to anywhere in the sentence including a noun. If ‘-lar’ is attached to a pronoun in Turkish, it does not multiply the pronoun: (Hasan a male name vs Hasanlar Hasan and his family member).
Second, in Korean, ‘-들’ does not usually combine with Animate Nouns. This means that Inanimate Nouns can have a plural meaning even if they do not use a plural expression. But in Turkish, Inanimate Nouns must attach ‘-lar’ to express the plurality.
Third, when the Korean ‘들’ is inserted in anywhere in a sentence, the subject of the sentence is plural. Also it use express politeness and affinity by using it. But the Turkish ‘-lar’ does not have this kind of usage.
In conclusion, we can state that ‘들’ and ‘-lar’ are similar, but are not be an exact equivalent to each other because they have different grammatical usage and meaning, even if they are used for the same situation. Due to such differences, when such affixes are used in similar situations in both languages, Turkish has pluralistic expression structure while the Korean version is recognized as a singular expression.
