“Areumbyeo”, a second generation Tongil-type rice variety (Oryza sativa L.), has been developed at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station (NYAES) from 1983 to 1999 and released in 2000. A single cross between YR3299-34-2-2 and Suweon 318 (was conducted in 1983 summer season) was advanced to be designated as Milyang 160 in 1997, with the pedigree No. of YR5256-93-1-3-B-3-1-3-1. This variety has about 109 days of growth duration from seeding to heading and is semi-dwarf tongil-type with 84cm in culm length. It has erect plant architexure, slightly long and dark green leaves, and stiff thick culm. “Areumbyeo” belongs to heavy panicle type with a lage number of spikelet per panicle. “Areumbyeo” is slightly susceptible to cold tolerance and shows some late senescence of leaves during the ripening stage compared with Dasanbyeo. This cultivar is multiple resistant to major disease such as blast, bacterial leaf blight (K1) and stripe virus disease. Milled rice kernels of “Areumbyeo” is translucent with non-glutinous endosperm and medium small round-grain and has low amylose content. The yield potential of “Areumobyeo” is about 7.41 MT/ha in milled rice under odinary planting with standard fertilizer level. This cultivar would be well adaptable to the southern plain of Korea.
