Manpung is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from three-way cross between Nakdongbyeo, Iri390 and Milyang111 by the rice breeding team of National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES), RDA in 2000. This cultivar has a short grain shape and about 102 days of growth duration from transplanting to harvest in late planting after cash crop's harvest. It has a desirable plant type with erect leaves and culm length is about 78 cm tall. It has high adaptability to late cultivation. Milled rice of Manpung is translucent and clear with non-glutinous endosperm. It has about 19.3% of amylose content and similar palatability of cooked rice to Keumobyeo. This cultivar shows susceptibility to leaf blast and resistance to neck blast and stripe virus diseases. The yield potential of Manpung is about 4.89 MT/ha in milled rice in late transplanting, 5.52 MT/ha in ordinary transplanting in the southern plain area of Korea. “Manpung” would be adaptable to late planting after cash crops in the southern plain area of Korea.
