“Jaeanchal” is a new six-rowed, naked and waxy barley cultivar developed by National Crop Experiment Station (NCES), RDA in 2001. This cultivar was derived from a cross between “Suwon261” and “SB881115-6” in 1989. The final selection was made at NCES in 1998 and it was tested as “Suwon356” in regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 1999 to 2001. “Jaeanchal” has compact spikes with long rough awns. The morphology of leaves is similar to that of check variety, “Saechalssalbori”. “Jaeanchal” has longer culm and more tillers than “Saechalssalbori”. “Jaeanchal” is resistant to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and tolerant to wet-soil. Its maturation time was similar to “Saechalssalbori”. A thousand kernel weight of “Jaeanchal” is 28.9 g. “Jaeanchal” yielded up to 6% more than “Saechalssalbori” in paddy field of the regional adaptation yield trails. The winter hardiness of “Jaeanchal” is ideally suited to the regions in which its average minimum temperature is above 10oC in January.
