“Sanglog”, a new covered barley cultivar resistant to powdery mildew and barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) was developed by the barley breeding team of the National Crop Experiment Station (NCES), RDA in 1999. This variety was derived from a cross between “SB85159G-B-46” and “Tapgolbori”. It was similar to a leading cultivar, “Olbori”, in maturing date and winter hardiness. It was more resistant to lodging but moderately tolerant in wet soil condition as compared with “Olbori”. This cultivar was strongly resistant to powdery mildew and BaYMV. Its one thousand kernel weight was 31.5 g. Yield potential of “Sanglog” was 15% higher in upland but 2% lower in paddy field than that of “Olbori”. Water absorption and expansion rates of cooked grain were 259% and 429%, respectively, and were similar to those of “Olbori”. The whiteness of pearled grains was 37.1, and was higher than that of “Olbori”. “Sanglog” would be adaptable to the barley cultivation area of the Korean peninsula except for Jeonnam and Jeju provinces and the mountainous district of Gangwon province.
