‘Taegang’ is a new six-rowed covered barley cultivar developed by the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), R.D.A. This cultivar is developed from a cross between ‘Suwon287’ and ‘Olbori’ in 1992. An F8 selection was made at NCES in 2000 and it was tested as ‘Suwon373’ in regional adaptation yield trial (RYT) for subsequent three years. Growth habit of ‘Taegang’ is intermediate type (III). ‘Taegang’ with erect plant type has good test weight (679g) and 1000 kernel weight (34.3g) when grown under normal cultivation in Korea. It has strong winter hardiness and tolerance to wet-soil. The average culm length of ‘Taegang’ was 4 cm shorter than that of ‘Olbori’. And its strong straw made more resistance to lodging than ‘Olbori’. It is susceptible to powdery mildew. However it has strong resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) except for Milyang province. ‘Taegang’ yielded 10%, 3% more than ‘Olbori’ in upland and paddy field of RYT, respectively. This cultivar is recommended for all of the barley cultivation area in Korea.
