A new six-rowed naked waxy barley variety, ‘Saehanchal’, was developed by the barley breeding team of the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), R.D.A. This variety was derived from a cross between ‘SB7803G-BC6-B-B-47-2’ and ‘Suwon262’ in 1989. The final selection was made at NCES in 1999 and it was tested as ‘Suwon364’ in regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 2000 to 2002. ‘Saehanchal’ is a winter habit (group III) variety and it has compact spikes with long rough awns. The morphology of leaves is similar to that of check variety, ‘Saechalssalbori’. ‘Saehanchal’ has strong winter hardiness and tolerance to wet-soil. The average culm length of ‘Saehanchal’ was 2 cm taller than that of ‘Saechalssalbori’. But its strong straw made more resistance to lodging than ‘Saechalssalbori’. Maturing date is similar to that of check variety. ‘Saehanchal’ has good grain pearling rate (74.1%) when grown under normal cultivation in Korea. Yield potential was greater than that of ‘Saechalssalbori’ in upland and paddy field of RYT by 2 and 7%, respectively. This variety is highly adaptable to the barley cultivation area of Korea except for Gyeong-Nam province.
