A new two-rowed naked waxy barley cultivar, “Pungsanchal”, was developed for split polished grains by the National Crop Experiment Station(NCES), RDA in 2001. This cultivar was derived from a cross between “SB901258GG-B” and “Suwon212” in 1991. The final selection was made at NCES in 1998 and it was tested as “Suwon358” in regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 1999 to 2001. It has narrow leaves and medium spikes with medium rough awns. It has short and strong straws and resistance to lodging. As compared with another two-rowed naked waxy barley cultivar, “Duwonchapssalbori”, “Pungsanchal” has stronger winter hardiness, resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus(BaYMV) and tolerance to wet-soil. Maturing date is slightly later than that of a leading 6-rowed naked and waxy cultivar, “Saechalssalbori”. This cultivar with medium short grains has good test weight (790 g), 1,000-kernel weight (35.8 g) and grain pearling rate (75.2%) when grown under normal cultivation in Korea. “Pungsanchal” has a waxy kernel suited to be cooked with rice. When processed for split polished grains, the yield of final products (56%) is higher than that of “Duwonchapssalbori”. Yield potential is greater than that of “Saechalssalbori” in upland and paddy field in the regional adaptation yield trails by 2 and 5%, respectively. The winter hardiness of this cultivar is ideally suited to the regions in which its average minimum temperature is above 8oC in January.
