The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of ‘-eul gyeom’ in ‘meaning’, ‘form’, and ‘use’ and offer grammatical information on ‘-eul gyeom’ for the Korean language education. Firstly, this study tried to clarify the meaning of ‘-eul gyeom’. ‘-eul gyeom’ is a connective expression which indicates the purpose of the clause which follows it. Unlike other expressions showing purpose in the Korean language, ‘-eul gyeom’ can express that there are two or more purposes in the action, even when only one purpose is presented in the sentence. So the meaning of ‘-eul gyeom’ can be defined as ‘having two or more purposes.’ Secondly, this study also investigated the most frequently used form of ‘-eul gyeom’ based on the corpus analysis because there are many sentence forms of ‘-eul gyeom’ and the forms presented in the Korean textbooks vary. According to the Korean speakers' corpus analysis, the frequency of the form which presents only one purpose and omit the other purpose in the sentence is higher than the form of presenting two purposes together. Thus, it was suggested that both forms of presenting two purposes and one purpose be presented to the Korean language learners. Lastly, this study recognized there are certain pragmatic reasons and criteria for choosing to omit a certain purpose between two purposes and it presented the following three criteria for the choice. 1) It is possible to omit the purpose which the listener can easily guess. 2) The purpose which can give a burden to the listener can be omitted. 3) The purpose which the speaker feels uncomfortable to speak with can be omitted.
