This thesis is the study on the Korean Changkuk in 1900s. In 1902, the theater, Hyupyulsa was constructed in Seoul and it was the first theater in Korea and performed the variety show. The variety show included various performance such as dance, song etc. and it also included a kind of Korean traditional plays, Pansori. The actors of Pansori employed in the theater had to make the performance of Pansori suited for the variety show. In this process, the Madi-Pansori was made, where the traditional Pansori was divided into few pieces, Madi and the actors were acting, suiting the characters of respective Madis. In other words Madi-Pansori was developed for the traditional Pansori in order to be adapted to the performance on the stage of theatre. In 1905, Japan concluded a protectorate treaty with Korea by force. As the political situation got worse, many writings to criticize the commerciality and popularity of theatre were published and they were called the essays on Theatre Reformism. The people working in journalism insisted the Theatre Reformism. They considered the Pansori as the representative of popular entertainments and pointed them as the objects which had to be improved. Like this the public opinion was getting worse in society but the number of theatre in Seoul was growing and the performance of Madi-Pansori was getting more and more. The actors of Pansori employed in the theater thought that the taste of their customers was more important than the Theatre Reformers' opinion, therefore the Madi-Pansori was changing into the performance with the magnificent spectacle. In 1900s the origin of Changkuk, Madi-Pansori was made. The actors of Pansori who participated in Madi-Pansori just processed the traditional Pansori to be suitable for the stage of theater, because they didn't have the ability to create new Pansori. It was the tragedy of Changkuk in 1900s that though it was the play made newly at the beginning of modern age, it didn't accept the modern spirit and as the result it became the object of the social criticism and was demanded to be improved.
