This study investigated the antibacterial activitiesof sophoraflavanone G from Sophora flavescens in combinationwith two antimicrobial agents against oral bacteria. Thecombined effect of sophoraflavanone G and the antimicrobialagents was evaluated using the checkerboard method toobtain a fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index. Theto have a synergistic effect against S. mutans, S. sanguinis, S.sobrinus, S. gordonii, A. actinomycetemcomitans, F. nucleatum,P. intermedia, and P. gingivalis, whereas the sophoraflavanoneG+gentamicin (GM) combination had a synergistic effect againstS. sanguinis, S. criceti, S. anginosus, A. actinomycetemcomitans,F. nucleatum, P. intermedia, and P. gingivaliscombination exhibited any antagonistic interactions (FICindex>4). In particular, the MICs/MBCs for al the bacteriawere reduced to one-half ~ one-sixteenth as a result of thedrug combinations. A synergistic interaction was also confirmedby time-kil studies for nine bacteria where the checkerboardsuggested synergy. Thus, a strong bactericidal effect was exertedthrough the drug combinations, plus in vitro data sugestedthat sophoraflavanone G combined with other antibiotics maybe microbiologicaly beneficial rather than antagonistic.
