Joengmeen GyeFeaturing the adventures and escapes of courageous, even purportedly heroic criminals, the Newgate novels of the early Victorian period gained immediate and overwhelming popularity among the reading public. Newgate novels generally portrayed criminals sympathetically in opposition to the severity of criminal law and social injustice at the time. In a society where the mores of the middle class, which emphasized obedience to social and civic codes of behavior, increasingly composed the dominant social and cultural ethic, the Newgate novel's glorification of crime eventually came to represent a denial of middle-class ideology. Furthermore, in a time of heightened political insecurity dominated by the rise of Chartist groups, idealizing criminals appeared to undermine the established order of a society.This paper examines, through his critical essays and parodic fictions, how Thackeray criticizes and mocks the romanticizing of low criminals in Newgate novels, particularly those by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, the favored popular novelist and founder of the Newgate novel. By exposing the sordid realities of criminal life and parodying those criminals depicted as heroic, Thackeray fought an ultimately successful campaign against Bulwer-Lytton, helping to rail Newgate fiction out of existence.
