Alert to the need of the times and aware of what would catch the public interest, Newgate novelists featured criminals as sympathetic central characters and attacked the legal system as an instrument of class oppression. In a society where the ideology of the middle class increasingly constituted the dominant social and cultural values, however, the romanticizing of criminals, as often found in Newgate novels, appeared threatening to the established order of a society. Reflecting the growing intolerance of the Victorian middle class for Newgate novels, Thackeray endeavored to disrupt the Newgate tradition in Victorian fiction, and Catherine was the beginning of his continuing campaign against the Newgate novels. This paper examines how Thackeray, through Catherine, criticizes the Newgate novels, especially Dickens’s Oliver Twist, in an attempt to correct the false, even hazardous, view of reality embodied in this popular literary form. In his battle against the Newgate writers, Thackeray contributed much in establishing, solidifying, and perpetuating middle-class ideology in Victorian literature.
