Yoon Dong-joo's poem The <Mercury> is difficult to read. The <Mercury> was interpretered as either a poem of historical reality which shows colonial situation or a poem of meditation. But The <Mercury> has the image of mercury which means confined school life and the walking motif which means free and true life. I think the unintelligible passage of "position of history" implies the attitude of true life. Walking is a universal deed of mankind. It is related with contemplation and philosophical thought. Yoon Dong-joo's poems which has the walking motif are as follows; <Mercury>(1937), <New Way>(1938), <Miracle>(1938), <Self-portrait>(1939), <Way>(1941), <Prelude>(1941), <By the Blowing of the Wind>(1941), <Confessions> (1942)which is his last poem in his homeland. These poems are contemplation poetry which quests for his true life, destiny and mission, fundamental principle of life and universe. And he wanted to recover his original life in his contemplation poetry. The <Mercury> shows that his meditation was originated by the strolling habit of the poet. In his poems the walking motif was a way of quest, a way of spiritual journey for the becoming of the himself.
