Based on the fact that Yoon Dong Ju's prose Ending-Beginning and poem The Way were written almost simultaneously and that these two works show significant similarities in terms of content and conception, this paper proposes ro discuss how the two are related. After a close reading of Yoon's "Ending-Begining," I explore how the poem The Way was inspired by this previous work. I also explore how the poem overcomes the limitations of the original prose by adding one more dimension of meaning.
Written by Yoon just before he graduated from Yon Hee College, Ending-Beginning is a description of what the poet saw in the course of his commuting from Nusang-dong to school by streetcar. As its tide suggests, however, the prose includes the poet's agony about where he should go and what he should do after graduation. Moreover, the prose, read carefully, reveals the poet's sense that change and new vistas are necessary at this phase of his life, as implied at the end where he wishes to go to "his real hometown" or "a station of the age."
Even the title of the poem The Way originated from the earlier work; To end and begin means to take a new way. But the poem not only continues what is meant by the prose bur also goes further in that "the way" in the poem has multiple layers. From the first until the seventh stanza, the meaning of the way develops: "the real stone wall" → "the mental course → "the course of life in time" → "the poet's spiritual course." By properly deploying several symbolic words, the poet expands on the meaning of the way up to the religious (Christian) level. At this last level, the way means a way through which the poet may overcome the sterility of life in the final years of the Japanese colonial era.
