This thesis is to review the Hermit Idea of Samyon Kim Chang-heub(1653-1722), a prominent poet and reviewer in the late part of Chosun Dynasty. His life and academic spirit seems to play an important role in cultivating his literary vision and poetic theory. The life of Samyon who was born to Jangdong Kim Family was in line with his family's prosperity and destruction. At the same time, the family's destiny was closely related with the present-time political situation and had to go through so many ups and downs, compared with other family's. He and his elder brother Nongam, after losing their father in the political turmoil of Kisawhankug gave up taking part in the politics and came to have interests in ‘Dohak' (Confucian metaphysics) and poetics. He who had the very distinct propensity for ‘Sansuchwihyang'(an attitude of loving the natural beauty and of actively travelling around mountains and rivers of beautiful scenery, even intending to hide into there) travelled around every famous mountain nationwide and even had Mt.Seorak as his hermit at his late days. During the process, he was able to create as much as 5,000 poems. His literary thought and poetics was considered to be inherited mainly through his disciples. To take a look at briefly, his poetic spirit is considered to be transmitted largely in three channels. First was through his family. His thought was inherited by offsprings of Jangdong Kim Family. He had greater and more direct impact on them in the field of poetics than his elder brother, Nongam Kim Chang-hyup who died in 1708. He lived by 1722 and had an enormous impact on Kim Won-haeng, Kim Yang-haeng , Kim On-kyum, Kim Shin-kyum, Kim Yong-Kyum and descendents of Kim Si-bo. Especially as he led the poetry circles under Bukak Mountain, northwest to Seoul, he groomed many poets. Second channel was through those who had strong literary characteristics. They are Lee Byung-yon, Lee Byung-Sung, Shin Jung-ha, Lee ha-kon, Shin Yu-han, An Suk-kyung, Cho Ku-Myung, ‘Yohang’ literary men who worked since the war under the leadership of ‘Hong Se-tae’ also belonged to this group. Third was Samyon's disciples and descendents. They are mainly ‘Shilhak’ Scholars, Hong Dae-yong, Park Ji-Won, Lee Duk-mu, Sung Dae-jung. Hong Dae-yong came to worship the academic tradition of Samyon through his master Kim Won-haeng, and others through Kim Yong-kyum. This part will remain as my future study field.
