Kim, Won´il´s works could be divided 3 periods. The first period is about 10 years after his literary debut. He mostly wrote short stories in this period. The second period started from <Red Sunset>. He mainly dealt with so called, ´the partition problem (of the Korean peninsula)´ in this period. The third period is the 1990s. He wrote <Evergreen Pines> and expanded his literary territory to the subject, ´the accomplishment of universal humanity´ in this period. Considering 3 periods, Kim has expanded his novelistic form from short stories via full-length novels to roman-fleuves. He has also deepened his novelistic contents from the study of ego(individuality) via the study of history(ethnic specificity) to the pursuit of the universality. In this theme, I observed the process of development of Kim´s works with mainly his medium-length and short stories and studied the relation between the characteristics of each period and the historical background or Kim´s inner world. In Kim´s works, a reflection of ego having artistic temperaments appears and goes looking for his father-the root of the other ego-who went to the north Korea. the reflection is forced to be the firstborn son and is also under the obsession that himself has to be the firstborn son. The reflection has to meet and accept his father but fails because the father dispearate efforts to find his father with idealistic thought. Finally, Kim could meet the father only through history. The result of the meeting forms a huge stream of ´the partition literature´. At the same time, ´I´(an artist or a novelist) achieves success in pursuing universal humanity at last. ´I´ succeeds in being a father for himself by embracing his father in history and by embracing his mother in reality. At this spot, Kim marches forward to a new literary subject, Kim´s ego in his faith is eager to meet an ideal human throughout Korean history in the 20th century. That fervent aspiration made Kim march to persuing the universal humanity. Kim´s works tell us a story about an artist(Kim himself) who creates the universal humanity embracing the Korean tragic history(father) of the partition and the people´s tearful life(mother) full of suffering. Kim´s works have both the individuality and the universality and will be regarded as one of the most important branches in Korean contemporary literature history by the fact.
