In this thesis, I analyze mistranslations in a Chinese Korean translation based on Mo Yan’s Shifuyuelaiyueyoumo. Many researchers argue that researchers should place a much greater focus on literary merit when evaluating translations. However, even excellent translators never translate perfectly, so every translated text has mistranslations. Therefore, the starting point of translation evaluation should be to identify mistakes in translation because it is very difficult to accomplish the purpose of translation with mistranslations. The most difficult challenge in evaluating translation is that the assessors must first perfectly understand the source text and then evaluate the translated text. Therefore, in this thesis, I read and analyzed both the target text and the source text several times. I classified the mistranslations by two causes: syntactical errors and semantic-pragmatic errors. These two errors might be caused by translators’ knowledge of foreign languages and attitude toward translating. In addition, there are many ambiguous words and sentences which cannot be regarded as mistranslations but can pose more serious problems than mistranslations. We need to pay more attention to these matters.
