This paper considered ‘living Chan’, a trend in present China. It is Buddhist monk Jìnghuì(淨慧) that brought ‘living Chan’ into fashion to China. The writer inquired into Jìnghuì’s life and the theory of his ‘living Chan’ accordingly. Jìnghuì was born in the period when Japan began to invade China and passed away in 2013. That period was the time of intense revolution in history such as the Sino-Japanese War, the civil war between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party, the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the Cultural Revolution, and reformation open, etc. In this period, Jìnghuì succeeded to Buddhist doctrine of modern famous high Buddhist monk Xūyún(虛雲). As soon as the Chinese Buddhist Academy had opened in 1956, he entered and studied. But he suffered hardships because he had been regarded as the ‘right-wing’ during the Cultural Revolution period. He took part in restoration of the renewed Chinese Buddhist Association after the end of the Cultural Revolution. He also had served many positions such as the president of Buddhist Conference in Héběi(河北) province, the chief monk in Báilínchánsì(白林禪寺), and the vice-president of Chinese Buddhist Conference and so on. He had restored many devastated temples since Qing dynasty. Jìnghuì advocated ‘living Chan(生活禪)’ in 19his 90 and enhanced it consistently until his entering nirvana. Through his effort living Chan have been formed as a trend in Buddhist world of modern China. Living Chan advocated by Jìnghuì set up Patriarchal Chan(祖師禪) as the core of Chinese Buddhism, then reformed it to the demand and established various practice items from the aim of the order, ‘enlightenment life(覺悟人生), dedication life(奉獻人生)’. Though Jìnghuì had entered Nirvana, his ‘living Chan(生活禪)’ has already made a trend in modern Chinese Buddhism and created a sensation on other religions such as Taoism and Islamism as well as Buddhism. Therefore consideration of his ‘living Chan’ means a lot to Korean modern Buddhism.
