The content and language integrated learning (CLIL) educational approach involves the use of methodologies which help build dual-focussed educational programs that support both the learning of language and content. CLIL has been promoted by the European Union as a means to achieve multilingualism and is becoming a popular and widespread practice of immersion English education. This approach has been adopted by some Asian countries. The teaching of English in primary and secondary education is currently a major topic on the Korean political agenda. The new Korean government has pledged to improve the quality of English education, upgrading the quality of public school courses. The key debate is how we as teachers ensure that our learners can develop their skills in the best way possible, in terms of English and the overall curriculum. This paper first describes various aspects of CLIL and how it is related to English education, and attempts to draw suggestions for English immersion programs in Korea which have become a much discussed subject in Korea.
