This study is to investigate the influence of small group activity using Creative Problem Solving(CPS) program upon students' creativity and their conceptual understanding. For this purpose, the instructional program about control of blood sugar level was developed. Participants were tenth grade students from a science high school and they were assigned to a control group with the individual activity and a treatment group with the small group activity. The results of the scientific creativity test revealed that the small group activity using CPS program was not effective for enhancing students' scientific creativity. However, the activity sheets filled by students showed that the small group activity promoted their divergent thinking more than the individual activity. The small group activity was found to be effective for the students with a low level of the conceptual development to improve their conceptual understanding. The results indicate that the interaction between small group members promotes the students with low level of conceptual understanding to elaborate the ideas and generate new ideas based on other students' ideas. According to the responses to the questionnaires, the students preferred small group activity to individual activity. However, there were the negative effects such as the criticism of the ideas, further explanations that cause lack of time, the social loafing and the free riding.
