Some researches identified that many Korean middle school students have misconception about reproductions and genetics. Many students confused homologous chromosome with chromatid, and misunderstand about homologous chromosomal behavior and chromatid separation on cell-division. In this research, middle school science 3 textbooks in the seventh curriculum as sources of misconceptions about chromatid, homologous chromosome, and cell-division were investigated. The sources of misconceptions may be as follows: (a) Some textbooks don't state that chromatid result from DNA replication. It can make a student to confuse chromatid with homologous chromosome and to have the misconception that the chromosomes itself split. (b) None of the textbooks states homologous chromosome in the mitosis chapter. And most textbooks explain only a sequence of stages for mitosis without describing mitosis as the separation of duplicated chromosome. Therefore, the students have difficulties in acknowledging differences between the division process of mitosis and that of meiosis. (c) In the text diagrams, a pair of homologous chromosome is represented in same color. It can cause students to confuse chromatid with homologous chromosome and to have difficulty in understanding chromosome behaviour in meiosis. Also, it can't represent the random alignment of chromosomes at metaphase 1 which is important in producing gamete diversity.
