“Life and Environment” unit in the elementary science for 6th graders is mainly comprised of the content of knowledge, and it has caused problems such as reducing learner interest, creativity and communication skills. In this study, authors aimed to develop new eco-play materials being used in “Life and Environment” unit and to apply the materials with the STEAM approach to promote creative outcomes of elementary students. The eco-play materials were developed as eco-dice, eco-play board and ecological pyramid. After demonstrating them with a minority class, the STEAM program using the eco-play materials was applied to an experimental group, whereas lessons of original “Life and Environment” unit contents without the materials was applied to an control group. The two group's post-test results on scientific inquiry skills, creative problem solving abilities, scientific attitudes and academic achievements were analysed quantitatively. The results are revealed that the experimental group increased significantly in the creative problem solving abilities and scientific attitudes compared to the control group’s test scores. In addition, many opportunities to manipulate and classify with eco-play activities may have affected the improvement of the experimental group’s classification skills. Therefore, STEAM programs for “Life and Environment” unit that lead active involving of students and related studies are particularly needed.
