The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the system and contents of 17 kinds of middle school science1 textbooks by the 2007 revision curriculum focused on the unit ‘organization and diversity of living organisms’ in order to help teachers select a proper textbook and reconstruct the textbook and to provide helpful data for the new science textbook development. The results are as follows. First, the average of total number of pages of the textbooks is 381.5 and the maximum difference between textbooks is 163. Second, textbooks show the characteristic systems utilizing various constituent. Third, each textbook have a little bit of difference in the presentation way or the degree of explanation of concepts concerned with subject knowledge. Fourth, the number of inquiry activity in the unit ‘organization and diversity of living organisms’ is 5~19, and inquiry activity is appropriately composed of essential inquiry activity suggestions. Observation, experiment and classification preponderated in inquiry type. Fifth, all textbooks include diverse form of reading materials and some textbooks provide ‘discussion’, ‘investigation’, ‘discussing and writing’, ‘originality training’, ‘thinking’ and etc. after the reading. Sixth, most textbooks contain science writing and discussion materials, and the contents are related with mainly protection of the environment, life care, ecosystem conservation and etc. Seventh, all textbooks guide details of a free inquiry accomplishment order and method. Eighth, the unit finishing of most textbooks includes various contents such as a concept map completion, puzzle completion, understanding the pictures, filling in blanks and the evaluation problems.
