This study focused on describing various playful incidents occurred in computer-mediated discussions among nine ESL children in their 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Based on discourse texts from the chat room, questionnaires and interview data, the results suggested that children in the study employed a variety of strategies to add an amusing layer in the online conversations, including a) playing with lines, spaces, and ordering of the posts, b) integrating language play and humor, and c) applying creative forms in delivering online messages, such as abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols. According to new literacies approach, new skills are required to take advantage of multiple communication modes made possible by new technologies in the new digital world. Even though the children were never instructed on how to play around in the chat room, they were clever and sophisticated enough to invent novel strategies and to insert various layers of playfulness while they chatted with their peers. The young participants appeared to view the chat room as a freer place, like a Bakhtinian carnival, where they could create their own playful environment. Their witty usages of language contributed to the creation of the chat room as an entertaining place.
