Previous studies analyzing the relationship between police presence and crimes have generally conceptualized police presence as the changed number in the police force or revised patrol policies, which usually present activeness in policing. However, previous studies have failed to consider such deterring effects of police presence might be exerted by the passive police activities or by the symbol of police, such as police buildings. Thus, this study conceptualized police presence as police buildings in themselves and aimed to analyze the crime-deterring effects of police buildings in X city, South Korea, under the deterrence theory and the routine activity theory. In particular, this study assumed that the relative frequency of property crime over violent crime is higher in the vicinity of police buildings. Using the geo-spatial analysis program, QGIS, this study processed police buildings data and crime data collected in 2017 into geographic information system (GIS) data. With the GIS data and chi-square statistics, this study estimated that the relative number was higher in the vicinity of police buildings between 200m and 375m. These results were contrary to the assumption of this study; however, this study still suggests that the limited police resources be efficiently deployed according to the uneven spatial distribution of property crimes in the study area.
