This study aims to analyze Pramoedya Ananta Toer's response to the image of Indonesian 'women' and the related cultural background of Indonesia revealed in his works such as Bumi Manusia, Gadis Pantai, Midah-Si Manis Bergigi Emas, Inem and Perburuan. It is easily found that Pramoedya had careful concern to women who suffered maltreatment and pain of poverty. And most of this suffering is caused by negative aspect of Javanese cultural background such as Java priyayi group valued government post above everything else. For example, in the Gadis Pantai, a powerful member of the aristocracy spots a young village girl, that is Gadis Pantai, and she is soon married to him in a ceremony that he does not even attend. And so the Gadis Pantai become the latest 'practice wife' for the Bendoro, one of priayi people. This move is not only a physical one; it challenges her understanding of her culture and her very identity. During her time with the Bendoro, the girl learns much about the inequalities present in society, the effects of colonialism, and the satus of women. The Bendoro himself, an intimidating figure, remains, for the most part, in the shadowy background of the novel. The womwn and the villagers in the story, those throughout to be weak, uneducated and unenlightened by the aristocracy and Dutch colonialists, are at the fore of history.
