Pramoedya represents Indonesian woman in his very own style. These characters live their lives, but they have their own voice at the same time by holding on to their principles. Gadis Pantai and Midah in Gadis Pantai (translated into The Girl from the Coast) and Midah - Si Manis Bergigi Emas (Midah-Lovely Lady with the Golden Teeth) show the fight against feudalism.
The character of Nyai Ontosoroh in Bumi Manusia (The Earth of Mankind) represents a woman who perceives life and subordination as the energy that gives her strength. Pramoedya describes his female characters as a devoted wife, good sister to her elders, mother who readily sacrifices herself for her family members. This imagery is common in other Indonesian writers’ works. In Pramoedya’s works, however, it gradually shifts from the old-fashioned female character to a tough female entrepreneur with the determined voice. This makes his works different and we can say that the female character representation shows a major change.
